Buenos Aires Launches Intensive Container Deodorizing Program

The government of the City of Buenos Aires announced this week the start of an intensive deodorization program for containers in the 15 communes. The Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene is carrying out this initiative, which involves spraying the containers and their surroundings with a scent-inhibiting liquid called "Odormatic," specially designed for this purpose.

Urban hygiene worker teams are distributed across the 6 collection zones of the city, equipped with backpacks containing 16 liters of this product. Ignacio Baistrocchi, Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, highlighted: "We know that during the summer the smell of garbage can be more intense than during the rest of the year, which is why we added this initiative that aims to neutralize and inhibit potential bad odors from the containers."

Baistrocchi explained the importance of residents cooperating by taking out the trash in sealed bags every day at a specific time and depositing it in the corresponding containers. In addition, he pointed out that this action facilitates waste collection, prevents bad odors, and contributes to the city's cleaning operations.

Currently, the city has a total of 33,045 containers throughout its territory, with the majority being black and gray. These are emptied daily, except on Saturdays, and are cleaned at least once every 15 days. The deodorization of the containers is complemented by other urban maintenance tasks, such as washing the containers, sweeping streets, pest control, and maintaining drains to prevent flooding in case of storms.
